1520 Sedgwick Ave in NYC, widely recognized as the birthplace of Hip-Hop, will soon be made an official landmark.
There will be a press conference held on July 23 on the street in the South Bronx, announcing that the New York State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation put their stamp on the location to become a piece of the city's history.
An official statement from the office explained their decision, saying: "1520 Sedgwick Avenue" meets the eligibility criteria being that it is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history."
Dubbed the "Father of Hip-Hop," the day will also see DJ Kool Herc, who was recently labeled "The innovator of Hip-Hop" by Time Magazine, being recognized for his contributions. "1520 Sedgwick is the Bethlehem of Hip-Hop culture," he remarked to Allhiphop.
All is not joyous however, as the building itself, home to many low-income residents, is in danger of being bought out of its tenant- affordability program by its proprietors, BSR Management. Tenants will receive warning of the final buy-out decision in February 2008.
