After nearly 15 years of going back and forth between court hearings, Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt finally received closure earlier today for his case on weapon's possession of an AK 47 rifle, stemming from the 1993 terrorist bombings investigation in Bombay, India. However the ending to the case is much of a disappointment as the charge itself, as Judge PD Kode sentenced a teary eyed Sanjay Dutt to spend the next 6 years of his life in prison.
In what seems to be a harsh punishment for the superstar, especially after 15 years have already passed since the intial charges, Judge PD Kode made it very clear in court that Sanjay Dutt had committed a
series of offenses and he was of mature age when he committed these crimes.
A teary eyed Sanjay was given a chance to make a final statement, and explained to Judge Kode: "I committed a mistake. Please consider my case and permit me to surrender after a few days. I have a lot of family matters to take care of," also adding that his sister was currently pregnant. "Give me just two days and I will come back," Sanjay pleaded, but to no avail as Judge Kode denied the request.
The judge also added that Sanjay asked for help from co-defendent Yusuf Nalwala to commit the offense, while Sanjay's aide Russi Mulla, who helped to destroy the firearms, was given
a suspended sentence of one year, in view of his advanced age and
behavior under the offenders of the Probation Act. Mulla was finded Rs 1
lakh.
In addition, Judge PD Kode also stated that Sanjay was present at a dinner party attended by underworld Boss and renowned terrorist
Dawood Ibrahim. For those who do not remember, during the initial investigations of the 1993 terrorist bombings in Bombay India, (Sanjay was never tied to the 1993 Bombay blasts) Sanjay was arrested for allegedly illegally obtaining several weapons with the help of underworld mobsters, one of which, an AK 47 rifle, led to Sanjay's arrest. Sanjay Dutt was later convicted under the Arms Act for illegal
possession of weapons, and was facing a prison sentence between five years and 10 years in
jail.
We wish to send our prayers and condolences to the Dutt family and hope that the high courts in India will overturn what is clearly an absurd punishment for a crime allegedly committed nearly 15 years ago. We will keep our viewers updated as this story develops.
