Real Betis hold back Antony’s shirt as sporting director provides update on negotiations
Manchester United are looking to move Antony on, and the winger is keen to join Real Betis.
There is no question that United’s summer signings have improved the squad, but selling players has proven much more difficult. As of August 19, not a single player has been sold.
Antony’s situation is especially frustrating. After a strong loan spell last season, he was expected to attract significant interest, but no concrete developments have emerged over his potential departure.
Betis have not matched United’s valuation yet, so for now, Antony remains in limbo.
What Real Betis sporting director has said about Antony
Antony was not present as Real Betis started their La Liga season with a 1-1 draw against Elche on August 18.
Manu Fajardo, the club’s sporting director, was asked about the Manchester United winger ahead of the match.
Fajardo told Marca: “We have to be respectful of the situation. Maintain caution, in line with what we’ve been discussing. It’s a complex operation, given the profile of the player he is, and the profile of the club he belongs to.
“I don’t like speculation in the middle of the transfer window. We have to remain focused on the good work we’re doing; there’s still a long way to go.”
United are looking for a fee around £30 million for Antony, but so far Betis have not agreed to pay that amount.
The Brazilian is prepared to lower his wages to make his move happen and has already turned down interest from Saudi Pro League clubs. However, any deal will require both clubs to come to terms first.
Marca says Real Betis are reserving number 7 shirt for Antony
Antony, who wore number seven on loan at Betis last season, significantly contributed to their Europa Conference League Final run.
So, while the club remain hopeful about his return, they have not reissued his number.
The vacancy extends beyond just his shirt number. According to Marca: “Betis have kept it for him, along with a non-EU spot.”
Behind closed doors, Betis seem confident they will eventually get their man. Whether that means wearing United down or meeting their valuation remains to be seen.
With the World Cup on the horizon, Antony needs regular football and stability. His representatives are likely pushing hard behind the scenes to make sure this move happens soon.
