Man Utd players show true colours with Tyrell Malacia after Ruben Amorim decision
Manchester United's squad rallied behind Tyrell Malacia's return to first-team training last month, following the Dutch left-back's stint in Ruben Amorim's infamous 'bomb squad'. The 26-year-old, who had expressed his wish to leave Old Trafford in the summer, was one of five players who made their intentions clear.
Malacia found it difficult to secure regular playing time after recovering from a severe knee injury and spent the second half of the previous season on loan at PSV. Despite pushing for a move during the off-season, he failed to secure a transfer, unlike teammates Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho.
The Dutch defender was the sole survivor of the 'bomb squad' at United post the summer transfer window, leading to Amorim's decision to reintegrate him into the first-team setup. He was spotted back in senior training on October 1 and later named as a substitute for the Brighton match that month.
As per The Athletic, United's players fully supported Amorim's decision to bring Malacia back into the mix, and the head coach took this feedback on board when selecting the squad for the Brighton game.
Malacia joined United in a £13million deal from Feyenoord in July 2022, marking Erik ten Hag's inaugural signing as the Red Devils' boss. He quickly became a key player in Ten Hag's team during his debut season, making 39 appearances across all competitions and contributing to the Reds' Carabao Cup victory.
However, in the summer of 2023, Malacia was sidelined for a year and a half after undergoing knee surgery. He made his much-anticipated return for the Under-21s in the EFL Trophy in November 2024, and later that month, he also featured in the Europa League match against Bodo/Glimt.
Despite this, Malacia's time on the pitch at United was limited, leading him to decide to go out on loan to get more game time during the second half of the 2024/25 season. Indeed, he joined PSV on loan in February.
During his stint at PSV, he made 11 appearances, including two against Arsenal in the Champions League, and helped the club secure the Eredivisie title for the second consecutive season.
After his loan spell at PSV ended in the summer, Malacia returned to United but has not played any competitive football since. He was named in the United matchday squad once for the Brighton game on October 25, but remained on the bench.
