Donald Trump golf course receives $3M major boost but fans aren't happy
One of Donald Trump's most prestgious golf courses in Aberdeenshire, Scotland has been selected to host this year's Scottish Championship on the DP World Tour, but some fans are not pleased.
Trump had been hoping to see The Open Championship return to his Turnberry course for the first time since 2009, and despite a positive update from the R&A last month, there remains no plans for the fourth major to return. Despite this, one of his Scottish tracks will get some tournament golf this year, following an announcement from the DP World Tour on Tuesday.
The President, who is currently playing a big role in peace negotiations between the PGA Tour and bosses of LIV Golf, will welcome the DP World Tour to Trump International Golf Links Scotland in August. It comes as a huge PGA star was forced to have surgery following a crushing injury blow.
Welcoming the decision, Eric Trump, Executive Vice President of The Trump Organization, said: "We are honoured to host the Scottish Championship on the DP World Tour at our iconic property. 2025 is an incredible year for Trump International, Scotland, as we proudly welcome two world-class tournaments.
"And celebrate the highly anticipated grand opening of our new championship links course. This significant milestone reflects the hard work of our team and is a true testament to the exceptional golf and hospitality we deliver in Scotland.”
DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings added: "Trump International Golf Links Scotland has already earned a reputation as one of the best modern links courses in the UK and it promises to be an excellent venue for the return of the Scottish Championship to our schedule.”
As mentioned by Trump Jr, the course will not only host the DP World Tour, but also the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship, an event that has been played out of the Aberdeenshire venue in 2023 and 2024. Not everybody is pleased to see it slated onto the DP World Tour schedule though.
Taking to X, one golf fan wrote: "That sucks. Why couldn’t they find a better course with all of those great Links!" Before a second went on to comment: "Trump? Boycott the event." A third then went on to tweet: "A good reason to avoid this competition."
The tournament will be the penultimate event in the Closing Swing on the DP World Tour, and will take place between August 8-12. In total those competing at Trump International will play for $3 million in prize money, with the tournament returning to the schedule for the first time since 2020.
Five years ago the Scottish Championship was brought in by the Wentworth-based circuit to fit into a COVID-impacted schedule. The tournament was won by former LIV member Adrian Otageui and played out of Fairmont St Andrews.
